Common
asked questions

Common Attic Pest Control  questions asked by homeowners during the estimating process for animal infestation are

How much will it attic pest remediation cost?

Variables not included – ballpark figure is between $1.50-$5.00 per square ft for disinfection, insulation removal, air sealing attic floor to block penetrations, and pest resistant insulation such as cellulose.

Does my homeowners insurance cover costs?

Yes, in some cases some insurance policies cover rodent infiltration / damage from rodents such as raccoons.

Should we have all the insulation removed first?

Most of the time no removal is needed of existing insulation but rather disinfection of the entire of the attic. This link helps explain only to remove in case of contamination from feces or urine  https://greenattic.com/insulation-removal-service-green-attic/

Is the existing insulation deemed unusable?
Will the insulation smell if we leave it in place after disinfection?

  • This is a loaded question with multiple variables, but the short answer is yes, if contaminated insulation remains in place while encapsulated there may be an odor in warmer temperatures.

Do i need to leave my home during the remediation treatment portion?

Most cases no, working in the attic to remove rodents ( when the attic is air sealed) keep the attic space separate from the living space. While ventilation methods and plastic to keep work areas separate from the living space can be used when needed.

What is the difference between fiberglass insulation and cellulose insulation?

Exterior Air Sealing
To Prevent Rodent Intrusion

Your home is conditioned to the opposite temperature as the exterior, making it an optimal location for rodents and insects to nest.  The exterior is the first line of defense against intrusion. Air Seal as dis-similiar materials and seams of the parameter of the home to prevent infiltration.

Attic Pest Control Starts with the  discovery a mice, squirrels, or raccoons from hearing noises in the attic, finding stains on the ceiling of the living space, or smelling a foul odor coming from the attic. Making a call to remedy the situation should include several estimates, opinions, and treatment ideas.  We will provide a detailed list of items we recommend based on our experience. To ensure animal infestation is stopped, a sealed exterior building envelope is crucial.

  • Keeping in mind the variables such as size and the extent of the damage, we often find when homeowners receive multiple quotes for animal infestation cleanup, they vary dramatically in both cost and treatment plan line items, warranty, and performance for comfort and efficiency.  We recommend a balanced itemized proposal with sq footage of treatment as the predominant factor in calculating cost. On average disinfection is between $1-2, removal of existing insulation between $1-2, air sealing attic floor, installing complete ventilation, and insulation to optimal R60 between $3-5 per sq ft.

A critter / animal discovery from hearing noises on the overhead drywall may be a blessing in disguise ( an opportunity to address bigger issues such as heat escape, moisture, mold, or mildew. )

“To help stop mice from coming in, place weatherstripping around your doors; as a bonus, this will also increase energy efficiency. If your house has a chimney, get a chimney cap installed.” Mike Holmes

All mice need is a little crack in a wall or foundation to get in. A sealed home is the only way to stop the problem. It’s also the most effective and humane. So check your home annually for cracks where mice can sneak in.

7 expert recommended treatments to remedy animal infestation in the attic include:

Air sealing the attic floor to prevent mice from reaching the attic floor by sealing the penetrations around vent stacks, hvac, plumbing and electrical penetrations, and framing gaps while the attic floor may be sealed after attic treatment, the mice will still nest in the walls, basement and crawl space if the exterior penetrations are not treated * step 7

Removing feces / droppings with high powered vacuum while leaving the existing insulation in the attic

Disinfecting the entire attic to neutralize odors and kill bacteria ( similar to cleaning a rug from dog or cat urine )

Providing baffles for ventilation  in every joist bay and a vapor barrier top plate to baffle dam to prevent blown in insulation from clogging the soffits

Blowing in premium class 1 borate treated cellulose which is rodent resistant

Insulate air air seal hatch cover or pull down ladder

Seal exterior penetrations in the building envelope using a local contractor ( painter, handyman, or pest control service with exterior air sealing experience.) Mice in particular can fit through very small gaps so minding the gaps of the building envelop is crucial to preventing intrusion.

Rodent
Nests

Rats, Mice, Raccoons, Squirrels infected with a hantavirus can transmit it via their saliva, urine, and feces. Should their leavings be disturbed they can become airborne, humans inhaling those airborne particles can become quite ill. For this reason, nests should be removed.

Pest
Control

By proactively sealing exterior seams, your home will not be a welcome shelter for pests.  Pest control is an ongoing concept.  Regular seasonal inspection of dissimilar materials ( seams of any material meeting another).

If you are looking for a company that couples outstanding work with outstanding customer service, then Green Attic Insulation is who you should definitely call. I truly wish I would have called them years ago as I have been putting off suspected issues that centered around extreme temperature fluctuations between winter and summer, along with poor ventilation, within my attic.
